Air Suspension Engineer

Overview: The Air Suspension Engineer is responsible for the design and development of air suspension systems components as requested or assigned. Activities include component design and development, vehicle and lab testing, aiding with manufacturing coordination, and production release in order to meet quality, timing and cost targets.
  1. The Air Suspension  Engineer is responsible for the design/redesign and development of air and coil spring suspension products. He/she drives the design of suspension components and systems with best-in-class ride & handling and quality by:
    • Technically contributing to the design, component selection, and optimization of the suspension systems and relying on analytical and physical test methodologies to access product quality.
    • Performing 3D layout, CAE analysis, and dynamic suspension modeling to produce technical specifications and working prototypes.
    • Researching and implementing new techniques and technologies in suspension design including to improve overall performance, durability and margin.
  2. The Air Suspension Engineer will contribute to the architectural design, component selection and optimization activities of the suspension systems relying on analytical and physical test methodologies and robust assessment strategies.  The position will:
    • Apply Geometrical Design and Tolerance (GD&T) technique to 2D drawings.
    • Conduct Structural Analysis and calculation of new components.
    • Collect and manage component and vehicle performance data using a database and reviews and analyzes test results.
  3. The position works with the project team and suppliers in order to:
    • Assist with design and validation in association with overall program schedules.
    • Complete and release system, sub-system and detail designs.
    • Complete component and system validation, ensuring performance and durability targets are met.
    • Establish production/sales release dates.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related Engineering program) from a four-year accredited college or university; five (5) years total Engineering experience with three (3) or more years’ experience in suspension system development required;  Supervisory experience of technical personnel a plus.
  • Hands-on ride and handling evaluation, system optimization and suspension component design experience, including damper sizing and valving is highly preferred; vehicle dynamics lab and field testing methods experience highly preferred; air suspension experience preferred.
  • Proven work experience in the design and manufacturing of precision machined mechanical parts and assemblies which utilize metalic, plastic and/or elastomeric components partially under pressure.
  • Solid experience interacting with CAD software required (navigation, basic edits, etc).  Experience with SolidWorks (drawings, models & vault functions) preferred.
  • Well-rounded understanding of core engineering principles & design methods.  Past experience with APQP (DFMEA, DVP&R, PFMEA, Control Plans), implementation of DMAIC, DOE and QFD (House of Quality) techniques highly preferred.
  • Must be computer literate in Microsoft Office; Experience with FEA and other CAE software along with Microsoft Dynamics GP experience preferred.
